As part of a corporate restructuring that began with the abrupt replacement of its CEO in June, EnergySolutions has begun eliminating about 265 jobs in four states.
Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, the company handles remediation and waste disposal for a number of nuclear sites, including the decommissioned Zion nuclear plant in Illinois. It also receives more than half of its revenue from Magnox for the decommissioning and operation of reactors in the UK.
An EnergySolutions spokesman told the Chicago Tribune that the job cuts would not affect the work at Zion. Speaking to the Deseret News in Salt Lake, he said the positions are located in Utah, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington. The layoffs began Monday with 70 to 80 workers at the company's headquarters and its waste disposal facility in Clive, Utah.
EnergySolutions estimates the restructuring will save $35 million per year, some of which will pay down debt as part of a plan announced when David Lockwood was named as CEO and Greg Wood as CFO in June. The company employs about 5,000 people.
