Equipment problems prompted operators to shut down the boiling water reactor at the Fermi nuclear plant Monday.

At about 1:30 p.m. its condenser lost vacuum suction, the Monroe Evening News reported. The shutdown proceeded without any problems, and all other equipment operated as designed, a spokesman for DTE Energy said. The reactor exited a refueling outage on May 5.

Fermi is located in Michigan on Lake Erie, halfway between Toledo, Ohio, and Detroit, Mich.  The site has a single 1,122 megawatt GE Type-4 BWR first licensed in 1985, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. An event report filed with the agency was not yet available as of Monday.
