Operators shut down Unit 2 at the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania Wednesday to inspect its low-pressure turbine for blade cracking.

In a release, plant owner PPL said the inspection follows the recent discovery of cracks in unit 1 turbine blades that were similar to those repaired in both units last year, although not as extensive.

"We are prepared to perform the inspection and any turbine blade replacements that may be needed for the continued safe operation of the unit," Timothy S. Rausch, PPL Susquehanna chief nuclear officer, said in a release.

The outage will also see installation of additional diagnostic equipment to validate suspected causes of the cracking.

At unit 1, a maintenance outage is near completion, and PPL said it expects the reactor to restart soon.
