A fire was discovered and quickly extinguished at France’s Fessenheim nuclear plant Wednesday.
According to a release from EDF, unit 2 at the plant on the German border was working normally when a fire started at about 8:30 a.m. in a machine hall on the non-nuclear side of the plant. Response teams put it out with fire extinguishers, and firefighters were also called to the site and later confirmed the fire was out. According to the release, the incident did not pose a safety or environmental risk, and the unit continued to operate at 100 percent power.
Fessenheim is France’s oldest operating nuclear plant, first brought online in 1977. It uses two pressurized water reactors generating 900 megawatts each.
