Areva’s CEO formally announced the company will bid on a three-unit nuclear plant construction project in Poland.
Speaking before a legislative hearing, Luc Oursel said the company would make a joint bid with EDF, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
In competing for the project, the French firms promoting Areva’s EPR reactor will join GE-Hitachi, which announced earlier that it will offer both its ABWR and ESBWR designs. In a 2010 release, GE-Hitachi announced it would help conduct a study on the feasibility of building up to four units.
Earlier this month, Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA CEO Wojciech Ostrowski said the company would tender bids for a three-reactor project within the next two months. According to the World Nuclear Association, the utility has aimed to sign a contract and select a site by 2013, pouring the first concrete in 2016. Aside from two incomplete Soviet-era units, the nuclear plant will be Poland’s first.
As they, too, offer third-generation reactor designs, Westinghouse and KEPCO are also expected to bid on the project.
