Electric bills in Germany could increase by 20 percent as the country decommissions its nuclear plants, the German Energy Agency (Dena) reported.
Following the Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan, German legislators approved measures that would keep offline or decommission the 17 reactors that once provided nearly 23 percent of the country's electricity. Utilities have warned that abandonment of nuclear power would affect both the economy and the power costs of the European Union's largest economy.
Dena confirmed some of their fears Tuesday in a report that estimated household electrical costs could increase 20 percent by 2020, according to Bloomberg. The agency's head urged companies and consumers alike to consume less power to help offset the increase.
