The owner of Missouri's sole power reactor has applied for a license extension that would allow the plant to operate until 2044.

The current license for Ameren Missouri's Callaway plant expires in 2024.

“We’re confident that this is a high-quality application that provides the necessary information to enable Callaway to continue providing safe, reliable, low-cost electricity beyond the term of the original license,” Ameren vice president of engineering Cleveland Reasoner said in a statement.

The utility operates a single 1,236 megawatt Westinghouse pressurized water reactor at the plant near Fulton in the central part of the state. It first came online in 1984.

Callaway joins 14 other reactors with relicensing applications pending before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which has so far granted license extensions for 71 of the 104 operating power reactors it oversees.
