A company seeking to built Utah’s first power reactors took another step in the licensing process Thursday.
Blue Castle Holdings appeared before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as part of the early site permit process for two new reactors that would be built near Green River, Utah. The Deseret News reported project representatives told the commission the land has been surveyed for endangered fish and other animals. Blue Castle reported earlier this year that core samples have evidenced promising geologic features for a new nuclear plant, and NRC officials have made two visits to the site.
The company is also working with state environmental agencies and applied to divert 53,600 acre feet of water from the Green River – a step that has drawn opposition from environmental groups. Once the early-site work that was the subject Thursday’s hearing is complete, Blue Castle hopes to submit a license application for the reactors in early 2013.
